What does the debt collection process look like in Norway? A simple and clear explanation

1. Overdue Notice (Inkassovarsel)

This is an official letter informing you that if you do not settle the outstanding payment within 14 days, your case may be handed over to a debt collection agency.

2. Demand to Settle the Debt

After the case is transferred, you receive a document from the debt collection agency (Betalingsoppfordring). At this stage, additional fees and interest begin to accrue.

3. Negative Entry in the Debtor Register

If the debt remains unpaid, an entry (Betalingsanmerkning) appears in the debtor database. The result of this is that it becomes more difficult to get new loans, leases, and other financial services.

4. Enforcement by a Bailiff (Namsmannen)

Ultimately, if the case is unresolved, the debt collection can be handed over to a bailiff, who has the right to seize a portion of your income to recover the debt.

How can you manage your debts and debt collection? Effective methods

Refinancing with a mortgage

If you own property in Norway, you can consolidate your expensive loans and obligations into a single, more favorable mortgage. This is often the most effective way to reduce installments and organize your finances.
